Funnel Vision Chris Kridler Books

This book is one I'll be rereading for years because of the cast of risk-takers and the beautifully written descriptions of middle America and the storms that terrorize the plains; the same storms that impact two sisters, Judy and Shannon, who as children lived through a violent tornado that killed their aunt. The author writes how the sisters changed after the disaster: "It was a while before Judy noticed that Shannon had become a different person, and it wasn't just because she was growing up. She had thrown the old Shannon away. Judy, who had found her only solace in photography and art after the tornado, missed her." The author comments on the sisters as adults, "Judy was a rock, and Shannon brought out the granite in her."

Add to the mix a charming storm chaser who is shaped by his own demons, and the story gets off to a descriptively turbulent start. The tension of chasing storms never lets up as the author elegantly captures the unique character of the men and women who put themselves in the paths of deadly tornadoes. I love Judy who is the main character, and I especially love the way the author describes her emotions: "Judy could feel her adrenaline rising with the wind. It was the same feeling that made chickens hide and dogs howl, she suspected, a natural reaction to the drop in pressure and nature's keening."

This is Judy's journey as she fulfills the driving need to experience the tornado that had shaped her young life. Dramatic events finally lead her to the stark realization that she "wanted to see her garden live, her town survive, its children grow up without the memory that haunted her. She no longer needed to relive the tornado. She wanted to see the tornadoes, yes; photograph them, experience them for a lifetime; but she also wanted a future."

Just as Judy finds her future, author and storm chaser Chris Kridler has found hers in her irrefutable skill as a writer.

Funnel Vision Chris Kridler Books Reviews

A good read! I already want to read it again, and am looking forward to Kridler's next installment.

At points it's hard to say whether the main characters' greatest love is for each other or for the storms. In a way it's two romances in one, with the ring of authenticity to the chases that only someone who's been there could write. I found myself running off to the internet to look for pictures of all these weather phenomena so I could envision the scene even better. It works well on that level, as an ode to the chaser life. Captures very well the alternating tedium and adrenaline rush of storm chasing as I've always imagined it. Easy to see why it's so addictive... Calls to mind some amazing storms I've seen, and made me want to take another look at the Plains.

I like stories like these where the dialogue is smart and the characters are, too. These are believable people with believable lives and foibles, well developed with some personal history that made them who they are. Nice to see the smart girl get the guy, and vice versa. No spoilers, but it works out the ways things might in the real world -- nice departure from most fiction on the "romance" shelf!

(I loved the subplot about the low-rent Thor's Tours. That had the ring of truth to it... probably drawn from life as well.)

All in all a pleasure to read. Highly recommended.
If you are excited by storm chasing, this is the book for you. If you want great imagery, this is the book. If you want a book you can't put down, this is it. If you like romance, there's plenty of that, too (hey, I'm a guy, and I loved the book).

The author puts her extensive storm chase background to good use, writing a book that really captures the experience. As a chaser, I especially loved the descriptions, which paint a better picture of the storms, the people and the scenery than I have in my memories and pictures - in short, they're transcendent.

But this isn't just a storm chase book - it is a great adventure, with a romance woven through it. Whether you are an experienced storm chaser, an adventure fan, or a romance fan, check it out. You won't be sorry.
I was torn between giving this a 4 and a 5, partly because I tend to rank people I know tougher than others, so no one will think I'm playing favorites, but I can truly say that I laughed and I cried. I thought Kridler did a wonderful job with this cross-genre novel that has a little of everything action, suspense, romance, drama, humor.... Her knowledge of chasing storms and vivid writing bring an element of realism to the storm scenes, and clearly help the reader understand the obsession of the storm chasers.

For me to give a 5-star rating, I want a story that immediately defines the stakes, raises them along the way, and races toward the end with urgency. I went with 4 because there was some sense of waiting to see where the story would take me. One point in particular was a story-changing point in the novel that moved me and made me want to keep reading, but left me a little disappointed because the urgency of the story was lost for a while. This may just be the author in me talking. From looking at comments other reviewers have made, I'm not sure the average reader would agree.

I noticed one reviewer felt the characters weren't well developed and wanted more back story to explain their storm obsession. I completely disagree, especially in the case of the protagonist, Judy Hale. Kridler does a great job of telling us how this woman's life and relationships have been driven by a single event from her childhood. All in all, I think this was a great story, especially as a first novel, and I will be looking forward to more books from this author.
