Venice, 1745—an age of reckless pleasures, playful artifice, and baroque excess. An accident has reduced Tito Amato’s glorious singing voice to a husky croak. A tragedy— but also an opportunity. The once celebrated male soprano is now determined to prove himself as a director. With the theater losing subscribers to a rival company headed by an unscrupulous impresario, San Marco’s Maestro Torani charges Tito with locating the perfect opera to fill the seats in time for the opening of Carnival.
Surprisingly, a second-rate composer provides the very thing—an opera so replete with gorgeous melodies the public speculates it was written by the late Antonio Vivaldi. Even more disconcerting are the rumors swirling around Angeletto, a male soprano imported from Naples to sing the lead. Is the singer truly a castrato or a female soprano engaging in a daring but lucrative masquerade?
Both matters lead the perplexed Tito into dangerous waters that turn murderous when Maestro Torani undergoes a series of increasingly vicious attacks ending in his death. And Tito is the prime suspect. His own life as well as the future of Teatro San Marco now depend on his skills as a sleuth….

Whispers of Vivaldi Tito Amato Series Book 5 edition by Beverle Graves Myers Mystery Thriller Suspense eBooks

I really enjoy this series. Watching as Tito Amato, Venice's celebrated castrato, grow from a young man who is a bit unsure of himself and taken with the rich life of an opera star to a seasoned veteran with harsh life experiences under his belt has been fascinating.

Now in his thirties and looking for a way to support himself and his family, Tito finds himself under the wing of Maestro Torani. Wanting to follow in his mentor's footsteps and help bring the Teatro San Marco back into the spotlight, Tito finds that murder, politics and the opera are sometimes too well mixed.

I'm always glad to join Tito, see Venice through his eyes, and root for him to solve the latest murder mystery and make things right for his family and friends. The series has been consistantly good, and the mysteries interesting. Along with a view of Venice from the eyes of someone who loves it, but makes no excuses for it's dark side.

Whispers of Vivaldi Tito Amato Series Book 5 edition by Beverle Graves Myers Mystery Thriller Suspense eBooks Reviews

This has it all really. A complex historical mystery set in magical Venice.
Castrati, feuding opera houses, rumour and slander, intrigue, deception and murder, and of course, action via gondolas.
Teatro San Marco, Venice's premier opera house is failing.
Singers and musicians have been poached by a rival company. Now that competitor is looking to steal away the official Venetian patronage that The Teatro enjoys.
As a counter tactic and a last bold move Maestro Torani, Venice's most revered opera director, is persuaded by Tito Amato, himself a Castrato, to stage a new production by a Venetian, The False Duke. A production that fittingly echoes reminders of Venice's renowned son Vivaldi.
Looking to bring something different to the performance Tito goes to Milan to entice a Castrato, Angeletto, to star in the performance. Rumours and gossip however are already proclaiming that the Castrato is really a woman.
Disaster strikes when, Maestro Torani, Tito's beloved mentor and friend, is murdered during a musical soirée held at the palazzo of The Savio alla Cultura, Signor Arcangelo Passoni, a member of the Doge's inner council. Circumstances have Tito as the main suspect.
As I moved further into Tito's story, my interest was well and truly claimed. I was fascinated by the places, the descriptions of Venice and the people met.
There are some excellent lines. I was struck by Tito and his manservant Benito's discussion about motives for Torani's death, 'Murder is much like the opera--it hinges on life's great passions love, hate, envy, revenge.' (I'm sure there is a clue here if only I could see it. I nod my head at this accumulated drop of wisdom) Of course, as with anything, all is referred back through 'The Opera!'
As I came to know Tito more, I came to appreciate the superb gift he is to the storyline and the reader.

A NetGalley ARC
I've read all the books in this series and cannot wait for the next part of the adventure as referred to in Whispers of Vivaldi!!
I have enjoyed the previous books in this series and this one did not disappoint. Myers gives a fine picture of the Venice of the time
and I love her hero "Tito Amato" who never fails to win my sympathies as he works his way thru the maze of the society and the culture in which he finds himself.
I do hope the author reconsiders and has a change of heart and writes more Tito Amato stories. These characters are too precious to just let go of. I love murder mysteries and the settings, history, traditions associated with these stories is priceless. Ms. Myers, please do reconsider and resurrect Tito.
Fun book.
This novel is at once a neatly plotted mystery and a lacy confection worthy of the Baroque in gilded, dissolute Venice. The writing is so smooth as to become rapidly invisible, leaving me immersed in the world of Tito Amato his home life, his singing background and aspirations, his adjustment to his new role as a fêted darling of the haughty ruling families of Venice. The secondary characters are well rounded and believable. The investigation of a dire crime at Tito's first opera job is motivated and convincingly conducted. It was not necessary to know anything about opera, and very little about Venice, to follow this tale, but I learned quite a bit about both without being at all distracted from Tito's travails. A wonderful book, and highly recommended to historical mystery readers and those looking for a solid mystery outside the usual.
An elegant romp throughout the streets of old Venice when Opera was king and wigs and masks, standard attire. Again Beverle creates a convincing world with the textures of the time. I was at once absorbed into the setting and enthralled with the story. How she weaves the details with time and place is a master class in Historical Novel writing. The depth and consistency of the characters makes this an easy read. Her language and writing are so good they become another character. Can't say enough good things about this last Tito other than, come back soon.
